Compare Private Health Insurance

Health Insurance also known as Private Medical Insurance (PMI) is designed to cover you for the costs of private medical treatment. Medical related insurances have become increasingly popular especially with the current issues surrounding NHS waiting times.

Private Medical Insurance allows policy holders access to early consultations and fast treatment times without being subjected to long waiting lists. It may also allow treatment in a private hospital from some of the country’s top consultants and specialists.

When looking at Health Insurance there are various levels of cover available such as, diagnostics or treatment, cancer care, therapies, dental and optical care. Most insurance companies offer policy holders to pick and choose the elements of care they would most benefit from.

You also have the option to opt for a fully comprehensive policy which includes everything. Some policies will also allow those with pre-existing conditions to be insured, as long as there have been no symptoms in the past five years.

FAQS

You need to be 18+ to take out a policy, however, those under 18 may be able to be added to a parent or guardians policy. The parent or guardian can also take out a “child only policy” with select insurers. Most insurers also have an upper age limit however this varies from insurer to insurer.

In short yes, if you would like to add either your partner, child/children to your policy most insurers offer this as a joint or family policy.

Most of the time you can choose your consultant, but you should make sure your consultant fees are covered in full. You can do this by checking your desired consultant is on the fee approved list (your insurer will help you with this). If the consultant you would like is not on the fee approved list and you still would like to use them, you may be liable to pay the shortfall in these costs.

Yes you can still get private health insurance if you are disabled, however the majority of insurers will not cover any treatment related to your disability.

Yes, regardless of whether you have private health insurance or not you still have the right to use the NHS if required. If you are happy to either wait for the NHS or there is no time saving, you can of course use the NHS instead of your policy.

Whilst your policy will renew every 12 months, most policies will have an automatic renewal process. Due to medical inflation and your age, it is likely your renewal will increase slightly. With that, our partner will therefore, review the market for you every year, to ensure your current policy is still competitive and if not, make you aware of any better options available within the market.

You are not required to undergo a medical check however, if you opt to take a Fully Medical Underwritten policy you will be asked to declare any medical details. If you opt for a Moratorium policy, you would not need to declare any medical history.

Some insurers will offer discounts to your policy price if you pay annually. Some insurers that offer this are Saga, who will give you 7.5% discount and AXA PPP who will give you a 5% discount if you pay the entire premium in one payment. Bare in mind this does not mean that insurers offering annual discounts are the right choices for your needs, so always choose a policy that best suits your needs.

There are multiple ways to reduce the cost of  your health insurance premium these include:

Opting to increase your excess – This is the amount you will pay when making a claim, but should also be an amount that you can comfortably afford.

Reducing outpatient cover or removing completely – It is important to note removing this option will mean you are not able to select a specific consultant.

Reducing your hospital selection list – Another option, but do ensure the hospitals you want are still covered.

Some insurers offer a “6 Week Wait” option – A common option to reduce premiums. Put simply, if the NHS can treat you within six weeks you would not use your policy and instead have the treatment on the NHS.

Some insurers offer a no claims discount – You will be given a discount for every year you don’t claim. Some insurance providers will also give a discount if you can show that you’re generally fit, healthy and active.

Normally you would first obtain a referral from your GP. You would then speak to your insurer to make a claim and to ensure the treatment type is covered. Once your claims been agreed your insurer will help to guide you through the options available to you, from which choosing your consultant to which hospital you would like to go to.

When this has been arranged and your treatment has taken place, the consultant and hospital will bill the insurer directly, so you will not be out of pocket. You will, however, if required need to pay your excess upfront.

The cost of your Private Health Insurance will depend on multiple factors, these can include: The level of cover you require, Age, Medical History, Family Medical History and Lifestyle.

There are a few costs to keep in mind – the cost of your policy monthly and your excess. If you need to lower the cost of your health insurance policy, there are several ways to do this. You can: Reduce outpatient cover, Raise your excess (providing this is affordable), opting to use the NHS if the waiting list is less than the private one and proving to insurers that you’re generally healthy, this could be going to the gym or not smoking.
